Experience

Dr. Shariq Nisar is a distinguished leader in the Indian finance industry with a career spanning over two decades. He holds a PhD in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University (2003) and furthered his expertise with a specialized course in Capital Markets from the University of Mumbai. Dr. Nisar has served as a trusted advisor to some of India’s most respected financial institutions, including the Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange, GIC Re, Tata Asset Management, Taurus Asset Management, Quantum Asset Management, Cheraman Financial Services Ltd., among others. He continues to contribute as a board member to various prominent companies in the sector.

In addition to his work in finance, Dr. Nisar has made significant contributions to academia. In 2013, he joined Harvard Law School as a Senior Visiting Fellow, where he interacted with leading global experts, including Nobel laureates Prof. Amartya Sen and Prof. Muhammad Yunus, as well as esteemed scholars such as Prof. Samuel Hays, Prof. Vogel E. Frank, Prof. Noah Feldman, and Prof. Shahab Ahmad. During his tenure, he also audited the Current Topics in Financial Regulation course, taught by Professor Howell Jackson.

Upon returning to India, Dr. Nisar founded India’s first Centre for Alternative Finance in 2015. He then joined Rizvi Institute of Management Studies and Research as a full-time professor and is now serving as the Principal of the Institute. Throughout his career, Dr. Nisar has delivered over 50 international presentations at leading finance and economics conferences across Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. He has authored three books and published more than 60 research papers and articles. Notably, he was invited to present before the Select Committee of the Indian Parliament on the Insurance Amendment Act, 2015.

Dr. Nisar has lectured at world-renowned institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Liechtenstein, Tufts University, Oxford University, the London School of Economics (LSE), SOAS, the University of East London, the University of Ecuador, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He is also a regular course instructor at the University of Luxembourg. At Rizvi Institute, he teaches Managerial Economics and Financial Markets and Institutions.

Dr. Nisar’s contributions to the finance sector have been widely recognized. He has received the Skoch Digital Inclusion Award (2011), the Editor’s Choice Award (2018) from Mid-Day Media, and the IFFSAInternational Award (2016). In 2020, he was honored with the prestigious Bharat Inclusion Research Fellowship from CIIE-IIM Ahmedabad. He has also secured research funding from AICTE and the Qatar Foundation for various academic and industry-related projects.

Dr. Nisar is an expert in Islamic Finance and has advised stakeholders in a number of deals. He is regularly consulted by the Firm in transactions concerning Islamic Finance.
